“I’m not sure the doctor will see it that way.” His precautions amateurish? That gave him pause; his high-priced solicitor had sworn the accounts were well hidden, concealed behind a series of false names and equally false addresses. Was his operation so easily uncovered as to be breached by a woman? Dee rose from his chair and walked toward the entranceway. He gestured to the door. “Perhaps it would be better if you were to forget all about this and walk away now. The doctor has work to do.”

Kelly remained seated, intent on nursing her drink. “Don’t be ridiculous. I haven’t come this far simply to walk away.”

“But why were you interested in him in the first place? Why are you here? I must insist on an answer.”

“Because your Dr. Dee seems to have appeared on the data banks out of nowhere. And we all know that’s not possible. No one can be totally invisible or unapproachable. Even the Valley gangs have some records. But your Dr. Dee is a wealthy man, who has spontaneously amassed a fortune, and no one knows anything about him. He’s not even represented, for example.”

“Represented?”

“Yes, represented. Look, this neurotic hiding may be how they do things in Europe, but it won’t fly over here. You get nowhere in this country without personal representation. That’s why I’m here. A good personal representative can open doors, arrange contacts, advise on investments. And I’m the best there is. I was able to find him and only I can make him invisible again. Whatever money Dee has, I can double it in a month.”

The girl was audacious. He’d give her that. The claim was as ludicrous as spinning gold out of straw. But was she what she said she was? He wanted her to be. “I believe he has a lot of money.”

“Well I can make it a lot more!”

“Why?” Dee wondered out loud.

Kelly scooped up Gull and leaned back in the chair, gently stroking the cat. “I think I’m done talking to an employee. I want to speak to the employer now.” She smiled insolently.

Dee shook his head. “I don’t think so. I think you should go.” Kelly shook her head. She sat forward suddenly and Gull jumped off her lap, white fur bristling.

“Well, I do think so. Let the doctor be the judge.” She waved her hand around the room. “Besides, you don’t think I can walk away from all this, do you? I know people who would be very interested in a setup like this. Get Dee for me now!”

“Now, that sounds almost like a threat, and the doctor does not like to be threatened,” Dee said sadly, turning away. It was too dangerous to let this game continue—pleasurable as it was. The woman knew too much and as such was a threat to him. And Dee knew the only sure way to deal with a threat was to remove it. He depressed the button set into the arm of his chair. A door recessed into the bookcase opened silently and an enormous shaven-headed black man appeared.
